Generic Zerit or Stavudine belong to the class of drug known as reverse transcriptase inhibitor. It is an oral taking medicine that is used to treat HIV infection.

During HIV infection, the virus that is responsible for causing this infection multiplies inside the cells of the body. This newly generated virus is then released from the cells and gets spread all over the body where they infect other healthy cells. In this way, the infection gets spread to all over the body. This newly formed HIV virus must manufacture new DNA. This work is carried out by enzyme reverse transcriptase that is known to manufacture new DNA for each virus. This Stavudine is converted in its active form, Stavudine triphosphate that is similar to thymidine triphosphate. This thymidine triphosphate has to be used by HIV virus for manufacturing new DNA. However, the enzyme reverse transcriptase uses Stavudine triphosphate instead of thymidine triphosphate for DNA manufacturing. This Stavudine does not kill the existing HIV virus and also does not cure HIV. Stavudine got approved from FDA in June 1994.

Generic Zerit or Stavudine is a phosphorylated by enzyme cellular kinases into active triphosphate. This Stavudine triphosphate functions by inhibiting the HIV reverse transcriptase instead of natural phosphate called as thymidine triphosphate. This leads to termination of DNA replication by incorporation into the DNA strand.

Gemeric Zerit or Stavudine should be stored at a temperature of 25 degree centigrade. This medicine should be protected from light and moisture. Additionally, it should be kept in a closed cupboard so that pet and child should not reach to that place. The patient should also check on the expiry date of the medicine before its use.

Chemically, Stavudine is designated as 2',3'-didehydro-3'-deoxythymidine. Stavudine is white to off-white crystalline solid that has a molecular formula of C10H12N2O4 and 224.2 is its molecular weight. The tablet of generic Zerit contains inactive ingredients such as sodium starch glycolate, microcrystalline cellulose, lactose and magnesium stearate.
