Epilepsy Drugs

Epilepsy is a neural disorder in which activity of nerve cell is troubled and results in seizures. Different types of epilepsy are:

  1. Generalized seizure: Effect all parts of the brain, the patient may cry or make sound, shake arm and legs, take a deep breath, urine loss is common.

  2. Partial or focal seizure: Affect on some part of the brain and the jerk in specific parts of the body, patient feels slight unconsciousness.

  3. Absence seizure: Generally seen in child, patients become unconscious for a few seconds, may blink rapidly.

CAUSES OF EPILEPSY:

The most common causes of epilepsy are genetic factor, trauma in the head, infection such as meningitis and encephalitis, stroke, chronic alcohol or cocaine use, lack of sleep.

SYMPTOMS OF EPILEPSY:

The most common symptoms are seizures (electrical signal can be felt for a second up to a minute), unconsciousness, abnormal behavior, jerk in the limbs.

TREATMEENT OF EPILEPSY:

Medications are available to control epilepsy and when it becomes difficult to treat with medicines then surgery is recommended.

MODE OF ACTION OF ANTI-EPILEPTIC DRUGS:

Anti-epileptic drugs act by blocking Ca2+ channel, Na2+ channel or by inhibiting excitory neurotransmitter and increase GABA secretion. Sodium channel blockers and Calcium channel blockers act by maintaining the inactive state of neural transmission and stop the seizure, such as Zonegran.

GABA analogues act by binding at GABA-A receptor and help in increasing negativity of cells through chloride influx and stop the cell to reach action potential.
