Duova inhaler is a blend of two active ingredients; Tiotropium Bromide and Formoterol Fumarate.  This inhaler is prescribed treatment for the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The symptoms usually change with time. The main reason behind COPD is bronchospasm.  The symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder are; tightness of the chest, wheezing and shortness of breathing. This Duova inhaler contains 9mcg of Tiotropium Bromide and 6mcg of Formoterol Fumarate.

Mechanism of Action

Duova inhaler has two active moieties in its formulations; Tiotropium Bromide and Formoterol Fumarate.

Mechanism of Tiotropium Bromide

It is classified as anticholinergic bronchodilator. Tiotropium bromide inhibits the release of Acetylcholine from the synaptic cleft of neurons. As a result of this, the relaxation of the smooth muscles takes place. It is not used to treat the acute attacks of Asthma.

Mechanism of Formoterol Fumarate

Formoterol Fumarate belongs to the category of beta -2 receptor agonists. The main function of Formoterol Fumarate is to relax the smooth muscles of the bronchioles and to inhibit the generation of chemicals. These chemicals are released from various cell types; Mast cells, basophils, eosinophils, neutrophils, and much more. These cell types release few chemicals; Cytokines, eicosanoids, and Leukotrienes.


 Duova inhaler is indicated in the individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is also used in reducing the bronchospasm and increasing air flow into the lungs. 

Dosage and Administration

The dose of Duova inhaler varies from one patient to another, because it depends upon a number of factors; Age of the patients, Sex of the patients, metabolic rate, severity of diseased conditions, how you respond to the medicine and much more.

The usual prescribed dose of this Duova inhaler is 2 puffs once in a day, either in the morning or in the evening.

Mode of Administration

  1. Shake it well before use, so that it’s all ingredients mixed uniformly.

  2. Remove the dust cover of the mouthpiece.

  3. Assemble your device, by joining the mouthpiece with the inhaler.

  4. Priming should be done, until it produces a fine mist.

  5. Place the mouthpiece of the inhaler in your mouth then seal it with your lips.

  6. Press the lid and inhale the medicament deeply and smoothly.

  7. Hold your breath for 10 seconds.

  8. Then breathe out through your nostrils.

  9. In case of the second dose, repeat the above mentioned steps.

  10. Replace the mouthpiece cover.

Drug interactions

The medications which interfere with the working of Duova inhaler are as follows;

  1. Diuretics: Mannitol, Furosemide, Amiloride, Triamterene, Hydrochlorothiazide, Acetazolamide and Methazolamide.

  2. Beta blockers: Alprenolol, Bucindolol, Carteolol, Carvedilol, Labetalol, Nadolol, Oxprenolol, Penbutolol, Pindolol, Propranolol, Sotalol, and Timolol.

  3. Anticholinergic agonists: Atropine.

Side effects

The most commonly reported side effects associated with the intake of Duova inhaler are mentioned below;

  1. Dryness in the mouth and throat.

  2.  Abnormal heartbeat

  3. Eye disorders; blurring of the vision, increased pressure inside the eye (glaucoma).

  4. Feelings of dizziness and nausea.

  5. Constipation.

  6. Abdominal cramps.

  7. Nasal congestion.

  8. Viral Infection.

  9. Bronchitis.

  10. Pain in the chest.

  11. Insomnia.


 This inhaler is contraindicated in those individuals who have;

  1. Allergic reactions from Tiotropium Bromide and Formoterol Fumarate.

  2. Vision problems; Glaucoma.

  3. Diabetes mellitus.

  4. Cardiac disorders.

  5. Hyperthyroidism.

  6. Liver or kidney disorders.

  7. Throat and lung infection.


Before taking this Duova inhaler, you must take care of few points;

  1. Follow your prescription.

  2. Do not use it after its expiry date.

  3. Reveal your medical history with your Doctor.

  4. Avoid its contact with your eyes, it may cause vision problems.



The temperature required for its storage should be below 25°C. Keep this inhaler away from the reach of children and domestic pets. Avoid its exposure in the moisture, heat and light. Do not spray it on an open flame.

Missed dose

When you missed your dose, do not double the dose in order to catch up the dosing schedule. If it is closer to the time of your next dose then skip the missed dose. Resume your daily dosing schedule.
