Generic Duolin Inhaler is used for treating and preventing shortness of breath, wheezing, etc. that is caused due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchitis and emphysema. This inhaler contains two medicine in it named as ipratropium and albuterol. Together, they work and help in relaxing the muscle around the airways. When the airways are relaxed, it open up easily and the patient can breathe properly.

Details

Generic Duolin Inhaler contains two medicines in it namely; Ipratropium and salbutamol. The active ingredient present in Ipratropium is ipratropium bromide and salbutamol sulphate is present in salbutamol.

Generic Duolin Inhaler is manufactured by various pharmaceutical companies that are located worldwide. It is available in the market under different brand names. Some pharmaceutical company such as Boehringer Ingelheim market this medicine as metered-dose inhaler and nebuliser under the trade name of Combivent.  Not only has this, another company, Dey, L.P. in California, marketed this product under the trade name of DuoNeb, as nebulizer. In Italy, this inhaler is sold as Breva. Furthermore, Cipla, a pharmaceutical company in India, sold this product under the trade name of Duolin. FDA has approved this medicine in October 1996.

Generic Duolin Inhaler should be stored at room temperature. This medicine should be protected from light, heat and dampness as such parameters might alter the effectiveness of the medicine. It should be kept at such a place where pet and child should not reach. The patient should always check the expiry date of the medicine before using it. In case, the medicine is expired. It should be disposed properly with the help of local disposal company. 

Mechanism of action: 

Generic Duolin Inhaler contains two bronchodilator, albuterol and ipratropium. Both work on different mechanism and provide relief from asthma, etc. Albuterol is a beta-2 agonist that stimulates beta-2-recpetos on the smooth muscle cells. Due to which, muscle cells gets relaxed and open airways. On the other hand Ipratropium is responsible for blocking the effect of acetylcholine, present in the airways and nasal passages.

In patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a cholinergic nerve that goes to the lung is known to narrow the airways. This is done by stimulating the muscles that surrounds the airways to contract. Generic Duolin Inhaler bears anti-cholinergic effect and thus, it blocks the effects of cholinergic nerves. This, in turn, causes the muscles to relax and airways get dilated. 

Indication: 

Generic Duolin Inhaler is used for treating or preventing bronchospasm that is associated with obstructive airways disease such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. 

Contradictions: 

Generic Duolin Inhaler is contradicted in patient who shows hypersensitivity to the medicine. Also, this generic medicine is not suitable for child of age group less than 4 years. 

Side effects: 

There are various side effects that the patient might get after using this medicine. However, not all the patient will have this side effect. Some might get some might not get any side effects at all. Following are some of the side effects that the patient might get after using this medicine:

Drug Interactions: 

In case the patient is taking any anticholinergic medicine such as Atropine, then they should inform to the doctor as it might increase the chances of side effects. This medicine should not be taken if the patient is taking tricyclic antidepressant medicine such as Amitriptyline, Elavil, Endep, etc. These medicines might increase the blood pressure and heart rate. 

In addition to this, some other medicines that might interact with generic Duolin Inhaler are:

  1. Propranolol

  2. Inderal

  3. Furosemide, etc. 

Dosage: 

Based on the severity of condition of patient and requirement of the body, the patient should use this medicine. The best dose is decided by doctor so it is always better to consult to the doctor before using this medicine.

Missed dose: 

If the patient misses any dose, then they should take it as soon as it is remembered. However, if it is time for next dose then they should skip the missed dose and take the regular dose. In any case, taking double dose for making up missed dose is not recommended. 

Overdose: 

Patient might suffer from chest pain, seizure, irregular or fast heartbeat, etc. due to overdose of the medicine. Therefore, if overdose is suspected then the patient should consult to the doctor as early as possible. 

Precautions: 

  1. Prior using generic Duolin Inhaler, it is advisable to the patient to tell to the doctor in case they are allergic to this medicine or have any other allergy.

  2. Generic Duolin Inhaler contains various inactive ingredients that might also be responsible for causing allergic reaction in some patient. Proper care should be taken by the patient for this. They should always check the ingredient before using it.

  3. Generic Duolin Inhaler makes the patient feel dizzy. Therefore, work that requires alertness such as machine operation, driving vehicle, etc. should be avoided by the patient.

  4. In case the patient has any medical history of any disease, such as heart attack, high blood pressure, overactive thyroid, diabetes, etc. then they should tell to the doctor before using this medicine.

  5. The medicine might pass to the breast milk of the patient and can harm the baby. Therefore, breast-feeding patient should always consult to the doctor before using this medicine.
