Mechanism of action:

Generic Combivent Inhaler contains two medicines namely Albuterol and Ipratropium. Both these components work in different ways and together produce effective result by relaxing the muscles of the airways.

Albuterol being beta-2-agonist and stimulate beta-2-receptors that is present in the smooth muscle cells that is present at the lining of the airways. This results in relaxation of muscle and open airways.

In contrast to this, Ipratropium is known to block the effectiveness of acetylcholine that is found in the airways and nasal passages. Acetylcholine is a chemical that is utilized by nerves for communication with muscle cells.  In patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the cholinergic nerve that goes to the lungs results in narrowing of the airways. This is done by stimulating the muscles that surround the airways, gets contracted. Now, the anti-cholinergic effect of Ipratropium is responsible for blocking the effect of cholinergic nerve.
