Anti Fibrotic Drugs

Fibrosis is a progression of synthesis of excess fibrous connective tissues like collagen in order to heal a wound. It occurs where the tissues are scratched or spoiled. To prevent the excess formation of these fibrous connective tissues anti-fibrotic drugs are given.

Anti-fibrotic drugs are widely used to lessen fibrosis in an organ. These are used for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. These drugs act to lessen the swelling of alveoli or air sac. Fibrosis is promoted by the intermediary agent called transforming growth factor beta (TGF beta). This substance is produced from macrophages and from injured tissues. This TGF beta activates the growth of fibroblast. Fibroblast is a cell from which connective tissues grow.

Working of anti-fibrotic agents:

Anti- fibrotic agents lessens the propagation of fibroblast and allows the inhibition of TGF-β and thus put a stop to fibrosis.
